About
I am Sryan Bruen - for simplicity you can call me Seán - a passionate landscape and weather photographer based in Dublin, Ireland.
The backbone of my interest in photography is my obsession with the weather. Since I was a young kid, I was always interested in the weather, how severe events and natural disasters impact people for better or for worse. A photograph is a very valuable tool in evaluating these events when they do crop up and has become ever more important in the age of climate change. I wanted to start documenting these events for myself using my own artistic eye and skill set with another interest being technology which cameras naturally are a part of. Being a dedicated weather photographer is a huge niche that very few take advantage of, particularly here in Ireland due to the normally benign climate.
Then as time went on, I became interested in other forms of photography where by a photograph is like a return ticket. We may not have a time machine but somebody could just look at a photograph and all the memories come rolling back. A picture speaks a thousand words after all. After I started doing massive projects like digitising my whole family archive of negatives, I further realised how valuable these treasured memories are.
One of my biggest aspirations is Henri Cartier-Bresson where I loved his decisive moment technique. I liked his idea that there is a particular moment that is perfect to capture a shot. In the age of digital cameras, we can just keep snapping to get the perfect shot compared to being limited to film like Cartier-Bresson. The technique still applies however as you could have a thousand shots on the card but only one or two may be ones you're willing to share. It's sort of like the idea of the decisive moment in a way but in a different perspective.
My favourite thing to capture is a golden misty morning, these conditions are the cream of the crop in landscape photography in my opinion with snow being a close second. I also love to capture colourful skies and noctilucent clouds.
My weapon of choice is the Nikon D7500. The lenses I use are the standard Nikon 18-55mm, 10-20mm, 70-300mm, 50mm f1.8, 35mm f1.8 and a Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary. When I feel I’m in the best financial position to upgrade, I will be jumping ship to the mirrorless brigade. I use a DJI Air 3S for aerial photography.
I was awarded with a distinction in QQI Level 6 Photography in May 2021 from Coláiste Dhúlaigh College of Further Education. I have won a few awards over the years including first place in the Coastal Landscape category for the Clean Coasts Love Your Coast photo competition 2025.
